This is the first issue of a new bi-annual CCA publication. Selection for each issue will vary – submissions are welcomed but the editors will also gather and commission work too.

Small Black Reptile is a response to the need for more outlets for critical writing in Scotland. In particular, there’s a need for various platforms where writers can develop an argument on a specific issue, or consider ideas around an exhibition in greater length than a magazine review. We hope Small Black Reptile can be one of those platforms.

It is being produced in a relatively modest format to encourage speed of publication and the possibility for a writer to elaborate an idea quickly without the pressure of being ‘definitive’ in any field. It will be initially published online via CCA Annex.

As with 2HB, our publication dedicated to creative and experimental writing in contemporary art, SBR is designed to encourage dialogue and a rapid transmission of thoughts, something that helps to fuel engagement in the art community.
